In December 2022, a groundbreaking law was passed granting the U.S. FDA the authority to consider data from new alternative methods in the preclinical testing phase for new drug development. Among the new methods are 3D cell cultures that mimic human tissues and organs, known as microphysiological systems (MPS). The new law aims to improve clinical outcomes while decreasing reliance on animal testing. In this article, we discuss MPS and review data showing how they can synergize with Bio-Plex Assays.

With COVID-19 vaccines now widely available, case numbers in many areas are falling. But the question remains: How long does vaccine-induced immunity last? Measuring isotype-specific antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 and the effectiveness of neutralizing antibodies against variants can help us better understand the duration and breadth of the humoral response. These data are critical to aid public health researchers and inform development decisions for vaccines and therapeutics. Read about the new Bio-Plex Pro Human SARS-CoV-2 Variant Neutralization Antibody 11-Plex Panel.

In a recent paper, researchers describe a protocol for analysis of 33 cytokines and chemokines using only 50 μl of tissue homogenate. The remaining homogenate can be used for RNA extraction or other analysis.

Since the first cytokine was identified over 60 years ago, a lot has been done to better understand these molecules. The use of multiplex immunoassays is one such way, though they aren’t considered quite as mainstream yet. Learn about how the SMARTS approach can be used to better align user experience to the performance characteristics of these multiplex assays and hopefully transition them to a more mainstream role in research.

BioMarker Strategies LLC, a small startup, has been developing an innovative method to do this by modeling oncogenic pathway responses, but they needed to accurately measure the levels of phosphoproteins resulting from the activation of these genes. Learn how they are using the Bio-Plex multiplex immunoassay system to accurately quantify the proteins and generate functional signaling profiles for these oncogenes.

The T-helper cell (Th17) pathway has been implicated in several autoimmune diseases and in cancer. New magnetic bead–based assays have been developed for several biomarkers in this pathway. The performance characteristics of these assays are evaluated from data on intra- and inter-assay precision, standard curve recovery, cross reactivity, and linearity of dilution.

Dr Hunseok Lee has known since childhood that he wanted to grow up to become a scientist. “You get to wear white gowns, look through a microscope at various substances so small they can’t be seen by the naked eye — those things were very attractive to me when I was young,” says Lee. But the realities of putting research into practice and translating ideas into experiments have proven far more strenuous than the young Lee anticipated.

Identifying Cardiac Defect–Related Protein SignaturesAugust 15, 2011
"The first opportunity I had to lay my hand on a human heart I knew that was that — I knew that I wanted to know how the heart works, but more importantly, how it doesn't work," says Dr Francis Spinale, describing his inspiration to both research and treat cardiac disease. Using the Bio-Plex® suspension array system, researchers in his laboratory are discovering protein signatures that have the potential to inform decision strategies in cardiac patient treatment.

Dr. Steven Kornblau has been on faculty at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, for 20 years, where he divides his time between research into further understanding leukemia disease states, and a clinical practice where he treats a small number of patients with the disease. Recently, his laboratory used the Bio-Plex® suspension array system to discover how cytokine and chemokine profiles alone can be prognostic for patients with the disease, and therefore have to potential to assist development of personalized treatments.
