Macrophages, the key cells involved in phagocytosis in the immune system, are extremely plastic and play a crucial role in adaptive immune response. Here we present a review of the different subsets of macrophages, signaling molecules involved in macrophage polarization, different types of macrophages and the characterization of tumor-associated macrophages.
