Monocytes are critical in mediating responses to disease from both the innate and adaptive immune systems. In this review we provide an overview of monocyte development and differentiation, characterization of human and mouse monocyte subsets, the receptors and molecules involved in recruitment of monocytes, and the roles they play in disease.
